"Havana" is a re-thought piece, based on the original "Havana" I painted in 2020. The original "Havana" is actually underneath this remastered version, which was reworked into a new and better developed female figure painting. When I began this piece I wanted to create a sense of depth and longing in the background, which I achieved by layering deep cobalt and cerulean blues with black (using a sponge and several different sized paint brushes). After that, I smudged black paint and once dried, scribbled several layers of pastel pencil which I also smudged to give an almost marble/stone appearance to the canvas. Finally, I used lighter shades of blue and teal paint, layered with a different sponge to create the final effect of a stony/marble blue-on-black, to which I drew the female figure you see with black charcoal, and used a fixative to seal the drawing in place. "Havana", like many of my female figure paintings, is an ode to the beauty, power and grace of the female body. Different poses or body language are suggestive of this power and I choose my poses based on my mood or an emotion that I want to convey. I think that the pose in this piece is very stoic, but still soft.
